Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829. Horace Hayes Fuller (b. Aug. 10, 1886, Fort Meade, South Dakota-d. Sept. 18, 1966), Brigadier General in the U.S. Army, graduated from West Point in 1909 and served in the Philippines from 1914 to 1916, and with the 108th Field Artillery, American Expeditionary Force, during World War I.
